Things to Do in Louisville

From bourbon and Churchill Downs to walkable neighborhoods and waterfront views — a local distillery's guide to the best things to do in Louisville, Kentucky.

← Blog & Louisville Guides

Louisville is the gateway to bourbon country — but it's also baseball, horse racing, riverfront parks, and some of the most distinctive neighborhoods in the South. Here's how a local distillery would spend a few days in town.

Most people come to Louisville for the bourbon, and that's a fine reason — this is the only major city at the center of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, with distilleries you can walk between downtown. But there's far more to do here than drink whiskey. Below are the things we'd actually point a visitor toward: the bourbon, yes, but also the iconic landmarks, the neighborhoods worth wandering, and ideas for date nights, weekends, and daytime trips with the family. We'll start (of course) with the bourbon.

Bourbon & distilleries

Louisville is the only major city at the center of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. Start with a flight, then wander.

Louisville Rickhouse
Distillery & Tasting Room · 717 E. Market St

Our government-bonded rickhouse in NuLu — barrel-strength flights straight from the cask, single barrel picks, and whiskey & chocolate pairings. Walk-ins welcome for flights, and the right first stop on any Louisville bourbon day.

Whiskey Row
Historic Distillery District · West Main St

A walkable downtown stretch lined with big-name distilleries — the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience, Old Forester, and Michter's among them — with Angel's Envy toward the NuLu end of Main.

Kentucky Bourbon Trail
Official Trail · Starts at the Frazier Museum

Louisville is the front door to the Bourbon Trail. The Frazier History Museum on Main Street is the official welcome center where most visitors pick up a passport and begin.

Urban Bourbon Trail
Bars & Restaurants · Citywide

A passport-style trail of Louisville bars and restaurants that each pour 50-plus bourbons — a relaxed way to taste broadly without booking a distillery tour.

Iconic Louisville

The landmarks worth building a trip around — bourbon or not.

Churchill Downs & Derby Museum
Horse Racing · Central Ave

Home of the Kentucky Derby, run the first Saturday in May. The on-site Kentucky Derby Museum is open year-round and includes track tours.

Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory
Museum Row · West Main St

Follow the world's biggest baseball bat to the factory where Louisville Sluggers are still made. Tours end with a free mini-bat.

Muhammad Ali Center
Museum · Downtown

A moving museum and cultural center honoring Louisville's most famous son, steps from Museum Row.

Waterfront Park & Big Four Bridge
Riverfront · Downtown

Walk or bike the Big Four pedestrian bridge across the Ohio River into Indiana, then loop back through the park's lawns and playgrounds.

Louisville Mega Cavern
Underground Adventure · South Louisville

Zip lines, an aerial ropes course, a tram tour, and an underground bike park inside a former limestone mine — one of the most unique things to do in the city.

Frazier History Museum
Museum & Bourbon Trail Welcome Center · West Main

Kentucky history under one roof, plus the official starting point of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

Neighborhoods to explore

Each has its own character — here's where to point a first-time visitor.

Downtown & Whiskey Row
Distilleries, Museums & Hotels

The walkable core — Museum Row, Whiskey Row's distilleries, Fourth Street Live, and most of the major hotels, all within a few blocks of the river.

NuLu / East Market
Bourbon, Dining & Boutiques

The rickhouse's home neighborhood: craft distilleries, chef-driven restaurants, and independent shops packed into a handful of walkable blocks.

The Highlands / Bardstown Road
Dining & Nightlife

A miles-long stretch of independent restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and record stores — Louisville at its quirkiest and most local.

Old Louisville
Victorian Architecture

One of the largest contiguous Victorian neighborhoods in the country, full of grand homes, leafy courts, and the fall St. James Court Art Show.

For couples & date night

Louisville makes an easy couples trip. Build a date night around a private bourbon tasting or a whiskey-and-chocolate pairing at the rickhouse, then dinner in NuLu and a sunset walk across the Big Four Bridge. For a slower evening, the downtown rooftop bars and the restaurants along Bardstown Road give couples plenty of adults-only options well past last call.

With the family & by day

Traveling with kids or skipping the bourbon? A lot of Louisville's best is family-friendly, and plenty of it is free. The Slugger Museum, the Kentucky Science Center, and the playgrounds and splash pads at Waterfront Park fill an easy day, while the Big Four Bridge and the Mega Cavern are hits with all ages. The rickhouse and the distilleries are 21+, but the rest of the city isn't.

How to spend a weekend

Got a weekend in Louisville? Spend day one on bourbon — a flight at the rickhouse, a couple of Whiskey Row distilleries, and dinner in NuLu — and day two on the icons: Churchill Downs, Museum Row, and a walk along the river. It's a comfortable two days without rushing, and an easy long weekend if you want to add the Bourbon Trail distilleries just outside town.
