Whiskey Row, Louisville

Louisville's historic bourbon block on West Main Street — which distilleries to tour, where to eat and drink between them, and how to pair the Row with NuLu's barrel-strength tastings.

Doing Whiskey Row? Finish in NuLu. Book a barrel-strength tasting at the rickhouse, a mile east of the Row — or walk in for a flight.
← Blog & Louisville Guides

Whiskey Row is the stretch of West Main Street in downtown Louisville — roughly 1st to 10th Street — where the bourbon trade kept its offices and warehouses in the 1800s. The cast-iron storefronts were saved from demolition in the 2010s and now hold three working distilleries, a handful of the city's best bars, and the start of most visitors' bourbon weekend.

Here's how a local would do it: two production tours on the Row in the morning and early afternoon, lunch on Main between them, then the walk east to NuLu for the smaller rooms and the barrel-strength pours. The Row shows you how bourbon is made; NuLu is where you taste it the way distillers do. Our full Louisville distillery map covers every district; this page is just the Row and what to pair with it.

The distilleries on Whiskey Row

Three are on Main Street proper; two more bracket it. Tours run 60–90 minutes and nearly all require a reservation — book the morning before you arrive.

Old Forester Distilling Co.
Distillery · 119 W Main St

The first bottled bourbon brand, back in its original 1880s address. A working distillery with an on-site cooperage — watch barrels built and charred — and a 60-minute tour that ends in a guided tasting. Book ahead; weekend slots go first.

Evan Williams Bourbon Experience
Distillery · 528 W Main St

Heaven Hill's downtown showpiece, with a recreated 19th-century Louisville streetscape and an artisanal still. The most theatrical tour on the Row and a good first stop for newcomers.

Michter's Fort Nelson Distillery
Distillery · 801 W Main St

A landmark cast-iron building at the west end, restored around a working pot still. Tours are intimate and the bar upstairs pours the full Michter's range, including bottles that are hard to find elsewhere.

Kentucky Peerless Distilling Co.
Distillery · 120 N 10th St

Three blocks north of the west end — a grain-to-bottle, sweet-mash family distillery making small-batch rye and bourbon. Smaller tour, fewer people, more conversation.

Angel's Envy
Distillery · 500 E Main St

At the east end where Main crosses toward NuLu: port-finished bourbon in a converted building, polished tour, reservations recommended. The natural hand-off point between the Row and NuLu.

Louisville Rickhouse
Bonded rickhouse · 717 E Market St · NuLu

A mile east of the Row, and the counterpoint to it: no production tour, just whiskey drawn straight from the barrel with a thief and tasted uncut inside a government-bonded rickhouse. Premium Tasting from $50; walk-in flights at the bar.

Where to eat & drink on the Row

Everything below is within two blocks of Main. Lunch between tours is the move; dinner, head east to NuLu.

Doc Crow's Southern Smokehouse
Barbecue & raw bar · 127 W Main St · $$

The default Whiskey Row lunch — smoked meats, oysters, a long bourbon list, open from breakfast. 5,000+ reviews and still consistent.

Merle's Whiskey Kitchen
Southern · 122 W Main St · $

Honky-tonk energy, live music, fried chicken and a whiskey list that leans local. Loud in the best way.

Monk's Road Boiler House
Steakhouse & distillery bar · 131 W Main St · $$$$

Log Still's downtown outpost: a serious steak, house spirits, and the quietest room on the block.

Sidebar at Whiskey Row
Burgers & bourbon · 129 N 2nd St · $$

Just off Main: a tight burger menu and one of the better-value bourbon lists downtown. Lunch and dinner.

Troll Pub Under the Bridge
Gastropub · 150 W Washington St · $

Subterranean pub by the riverfront with a big patio and an easy menu. Good for groups that don't want to plan.

Porch Kitchen & Bar
American · 280 W Jefferson St · $$

Inside the Marriott, two blocks south — breakfast through late dinner, reliable when everything on Main has a wait.

A one-day Whiskey Row plan

10:00 — Old Forester
119 W Main

Start with the cooperage tour while you're fresh. 60 minutes, ends in a tasting.

11:45 — Lunch on Main
Doc Crow's or Sidebar

Eat before the second tour. Barbecue and a beer resets the palate better than a third pour.

1:30 — Michter's or Evan Williams
801 or 528 W Main

Pick one. Michter's for the still and the bar upstairs; Evan Williams for the history.

3:30 — Walk east
Main → Market, 20 min

Past Angel's Envy at 500 E Main and into NuLu. Coffee or a shop stop on the way.

4:30 — Louisville Rickhouse
717 E Market · NuLu

Barrel-strength pours drawn with a thief inside the bonded rickhouse — the tasting the production tours don't do. Book the 4:30 or 5:30.

7:00 — Dinner in NuLu
E Market St

Bodeguita, Vetti or MeeshMeesh, all within a block. See our NuLu guide for the full list.

Getting around

Whiskey Row is flat and walkable end to end (about a mile). Most downtown hotels are within ten minutes on foot; from the airport it's a 15-minute ride. Parking is in garages off Main and Market — don't plan on driving between stops, and don't plan on driving after the third tour. The free LouLift trolley and rideshares cover the hop to NuLu if you'd rather not walk.

End the Row at the rickhouse

Production tours show you the still. We pour what comes out of the barrel — uncut, unfiltered, thieved in front of you — a mile east at 717 E Market in NuLu.

What is Whiskey Row in Louisville?

Whiskey Row is the historic stretch of West Main Street in downtown Louisville, roughly between 1st and 10th Streets, where dozens of bourbon distillers and brokers kept offices and warehouses in the 1800s. Today its restored cast-iron buildings hold working distilleries, tasting rooms, bars and restaurants.

Which distilleries are on Whiskey Row?

Old Forester Distilling Co. (119 W Main), Evan Williams Bourbon Experience (528 W Main) and Michter's Fort Nelson Distillery (801 W Main) are on the Row itself. Kentucky Peerless (120 N 10th St) is a few blocks off the west end, and Angel's Envy (500 E Main) sits at the east end toward NuLu.

Is Whiskey Row worth visiting?

Yes, especially for a first trip — the production tours at Old Forester and Michter's show how bourbon is made, and the architecture is some of the best in the city. Pair it with NuLu, a 10-minute walk east, for smaller tasting rooms and barrel-strength pours.

How long do you need on Whiskey Row?

Half a day covers two tours and lunch. Tours run 60–90 minutes each and most require reservations, so book two, eat between them, and finish with a walk-in flight in NuLu.

How far is Whiskey Row from NuLu?

About a mile. Angel's Envy at 500 E Main marks the transition; from there it's a 10–15 minute walk east along Main or Market to Louisville Rickhouse at 717 E Market St.
